Project Overview

We were asked to design the lighting for the renovation of a sleek city centre house.  The focus is on the large open plan first floor which is by turns an entertaining space, a dining area or simply a place to chill for a relaxing night in.

Lighting the open plan living space

The brief

This open plan living space (kitchen, dining, living area) needed careful design to give each area within it both interesting focal points and task lighting where required.  We worked with the client to look at the overall room design, and the discussions about the lighting design helped the client finalise the interior details.  The shelving and the staircase provided some opportunities for some real wow factor!   Also, to help create rooms within a room, we positioned and circuited the recessed downlights where the light is needed rather than just create a grid of them across the entire space.

Dino Tilt & Rotate Twin recessed downlight

Over the sofa area in particular we have used twin adjustable downlights rather than individual ones, when they are needed to be positioned within close proximity using a twin fittings is a really neat way of getting the amount of light needed.

Bespoke glass chandelier

This bespoke glass chandelier is a real wow factor and a fantastic way to link the lighting between floors. Everything about the fitting is bespoke – the shape, colour, quantity, layout even down to the ceiling rose and cable details.

Late night scene setting with Lutron Homeworks QS

The brief

Using the Lutron Homworks QS system we are able to create multiple lighting scenes. This scene uses mostly the feature lighting dimmed to a low level to create a cosy setting for watching a film, or for late night ‘just looks magic’. During the early stages of a design the wiring and likely scenes are already being thought about: this enables us to programme the system with a seamless flow from the initial design to the end scenes and overall experience.

Creating a Feature with Light

The brief

Working with the furniture company who designed and built the shelving allowed us to back light the shelves. By angling the light towards the back of each unit it enabled us to light each unit equally and not to be specific to the piece inside.  This gives the client flexibility to change the items on display without disrupting the desired lighting effect.

Linear LED

Custom made LED linear fitting to create a wash of light within each display unit. With the fittings being custom made to length it allowed us to evenly light the different width and height units and keep the scheme and light levels the same across the unit.

Artview picture light in a finish to match the frame

The brief

The client had a number of interesting pieces of art that we lit by using our bespoke Artview picture light. When lighting a painting we take in to consideration the canvas and frame width/height as well as the placement of the subject on the canvas. On this particular piece the subject fills the canvas so a beam width and spacing was chosen to suit. The standard finish for our Artview is antique brass but here we used a paint finish to match the frame giving the fitting a more contemporary feel.

As well as the light source being made to suite the individual piece of art using custom optics and LED spacing the extrusion can be custom finished to suite too

Subtle yet statement lighting

The brief

Using decorative items such as pendants and table lamps can really add to a lighting scheme.  They create visual interest in their own right, and add light in to the room where more architectural lighting (eg; downlights) would not be the right call. Here we have used a mixture of a pendant, table lamps and picture light to add subtle light to a dining area.

Elegant glass pendant

Over the dining table we have chosen a simpler yet still elegant glass pendant from the same company that supplied the chandelier over the stairs.  Using the same colours the pendant not only provides a focal point for the table but also provides sufficient light for evening dining.

Statement decorative pieces

Using table lamps within a lighting scheme is not just about adding decoration or interest although that can be a good enough reason itself but it also allows you to add  light in to a space without using downlights. On this occasion two table lamps either side of a console table ‘framing’ a painting works really well with the style of the house and the clients taste.

Bringing Artwork to life

The ArtView picture light’s main job is to bring the artwork to life but it can also be an interesting addition to a space. In this example as well as lighting the painting it is also adding light to the console table and flowers below, with its high colour rendering it will only enhance the display.
