Lighting for a stone barn conversion, West Yorkshire
We were charged with helping create a “warm, contemporary, slightly industrial but not minimalist” feel. The bulk of the house is a single connected space, with kitchen/dining/snug on the ground floor and the living room on a mezzanine. The lighting has to operate on a number of levels from “very functional” through “cosy night in” to “just looks great”.
Lighting the cosy snug area
The standout features in the family snug area are the impressive stone wall and window frame. The challenge with the window frame was how to fix the lighting without drilling in to the stone. The vaulted ceiling is a wonderful feature but it’s not an ideal place to mount fittings.
Custom mounting system for small display lights on a stone cill
To avoid drilling in to the stone sill we used a custom track with miniature LED spotlights which is supplied with one power feed. The custom made nature also gave us the flexibility to choose the number of spots and their positioning along the track.
Open Plan Kitchen Dining Area
The kitchen, dining area and dining snug are one space, zoned with light. Custom made linear fittings in the shelving highlight the tiles and ensure enough punch to be used as task lighting. Low level wall washers were added to the island to create a wash across the floor and high power uplights frame the stone door arches
Mood lighting and scene setting with Lutron HomeWorks QS
Lutron HomeWorks QS allows the clients to swap between different lighting scenes which have been developed all the way through the design process. The lighting is layered with multiple circuits controlled with a single button press on the Lutron keypads.
Creating effective hidden task lighting
We wanted shadow free high high output task lighting on the work area. We also wanted to avoid the individual LEDs “spotting” on the shiny surface
Adding subtle lighting to a garden with a view
Balancing lighting a stone feature in the garden without detracting from the view. A small discrete adjustable spot light mounted on a ground spike hidden within the plants was the ideal situation
